Other paintings in the Church of Panagia Phorbiotissa are in a more traditional artistic style but are also much more difficult to date.
Here, soldiers (B) in short-sleeved but variously represented mail hauberks carry maces and spears.
Their helmets have hanging aventails in the Turkish or Islamic manner and are conical or have slightly forward-angled crowns.
They also have small brims. The officer (A) differs in that his armour is shown as a lamellar cuirass.
His helmet again has a mail aventail but also has a wider brim, making it a type of chapel-de-fer. His shield is a large round type.
Even though this wall-painting may date from as late as the 15th century, the style of relatively light armour that it portrays was probably common in 14th century Byzantium.
