Cuman Warrior by Angus McBride
H3: Cuman warrior, [13th century]
The Cuman is firing behind him as he rides, making as small a target of himself as he can. He is wearing a mail shirt under his coat.
His conical fur-edged felt hat is a typical item of Cuman clothing. His sword is broad and slightly curved.
His bow is typical of the Tatars and other Turkic people on the Russian steppe.
(Main sources: painting on a church wall in Rimavska Bana, Slovakia; Turkish miniature held in the Topkapi Museum, Istanbul; sword from an example in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.)
