Smolensk
'Chronicles of Poland', 1597AD
The frontier city of Smolensk constantly changed hands during the 16th and 17th centuries.
This woodcut from the 'Chronicles of Poland' of 1597 shows an earlier battle after Russia had 'recovered' it from Lithuania.
In 1611 it was recaptured by the Poles, in 1654 lost again to the Russians.
