A Mahratta Horseman, Sketched in the Camp

Plate forty-seven from the second volume of James Forbes' "Oriental Memoirs". While at Cambay, where Forbes' (1749-1819) friend, Sir Charles Malet was the English Resident, Forbes made studies of the Mahratta army including the foot-soldiers and the horsemen. He observed that just as in the case of native foot-soldiers, Mahratta horsemen did not dress in uniformity and neither were they armed in the same manner. Also there was nothig much to distinguish in appearance between the officers and the troops they commanded.
