Battle of Samugarah, 1658

Previous large image      Next large image
This drawing illustrates the key moment in the battle of Samugarh in 1658 when Dara Shikuh, after his howdah was hit by a rocket, got down from his elephant to continue fighting on horseback. His troops, seeing the empty howdah, thought Dara Shikuh had fallen, and retreated. On the right of the picture Awrangzeb can be seen in his howdah, and bottom right Murad Bakhsh fleeing the field.
