Portrait of Sivaji

Sivaji (1630-80), the Maratha hero, led a series of daring raids on Mughal territories in the Deccan. He was a constant thorn in Awrangzeb's side, the Great Mughal being unable either to co-opt him into the empire or to defeat him. On his death, Sivaji left a compact Maratha state which continued his practice of raiding Mughal territories.
