PRINCE MIRANSHAH GREETS PRINCESS SERAI MALAK KHANUM
CA. 1435 - 36
PERSIAN
This scene comes from the Zafarnama, the chronicle of Timur's rise to power and the founding of the Timurid dynasty at Samarqand. Taken from a Zafarnama by Yazdi and copied by Ya'qub ibn Hasan, the page depicts a familiar composition. Princess Serai Malak Khanum and her sons face Prince Miranshah across a field, framed by text and mountains as well. The cloud-like mountain or cliff at the right side of the painting, nearly obscuring the Prince's attendant, activates the scene by overflowing into the border, bringing the story beyond the bounds of a book and into the reader's own space.
