Bartolemeo von Pezzen, ambassador to Constantinople from 1586 to 1591, wanted to describe Turkish habits and customs to his lord, Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. He employed an unknown painter to record the scenes and characters that once animated the streets of Istanbul. The result was a volume of images that belonged for many years to the Emperors of Austria and was then conserved in the National Library of Vienna.
