Detail of miniature from the Compendium of Chronicles by Rashid al-Din. Shows a walled city on the right, with two horsemen coming out of the gate. In front, a group of civilians stand before a figure on horseback, probably Mahmud ibn Sebuktegin, ruler of the Ghaznavid Dynasty of Eastern Afghanistan from 998-1030CE. Scene is said to portray Mahmud's conquest of the fortress of Asi in India.
