Detail of miniature from the Compendium of Chronicles by Rashid al-Din. Shows Mahmud ibn Sebuktegin, ruler of the Ghaznavid Dynasty of Eastern Afghanistan from 998-1030CE, capturing the fortress of Muhammad ibn Abu Nasr Muhammad, the Shar of Gharchistan (Badghis Province in modern Afghanistan), in 1012CE. The fortress is shown to the right of the scene, with a number of troops standing on the battlements, including two archers. To the left of the image, a catapult, as well as several archers, appear about to fire onto the building.
